We wanted to share a link to a new film about Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) that gives a lot of interesting and valuable information about the condition, its symptoms, and other resources having to do with the disease. We hope you take the time to watch this video-it really gives a good in-depth explanation of the syndrome and its affect on daily living from the perspective of patients that have had to live and work around the disease. We'll also be posting and article on HAE soon, but we thought it was important to spread awareness for both HAE and for this film. Thank you so much!

Daisy and Baron Update

Hello Everyone!

This will probably be a shorter post just to let you know how things are going with Daisy and Mr. Baron. I’ve been trying to work with them as much as I can when I have enough energy, and they’re very patient with their slow-moving Mom J. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to go out of the house much since December since coming down with something right after Christmas, but hopefully now that the weather’s improving, it’ll get a little easier to just take them out and do fun things with them!

Daisy Nov 2010-After a Bath

Daisy (my little redhead :), is doing well, and she’s developing a calmer demeanor, and she is incredibly fast at figuring-out what I’m trying to teach them (such as opening doors, etc.). Sometimes she gets a little distracted and I have to regain her attention, but she’s still a happy, growing puppy who’s so eager to please and learn that I know once she’s grown a little more, she’ll be a wonderful companion to have for tasks where I need a little more help physically, such as leaning down and picking things up. While she requires a that I have a little more energy when I’m working with her, she’s already progressed far faster than I would’ve ever thought, and I’m so proud of my little girl :)!

Baron is my gentle giant J. He’s now past my hips when he sits at my side (where he usually is if he’s with me and on a lead), and still recognizes, alerts, and responds when either my Mom or I are having problems-he can detect anaphylaxis, seizures, and, even more surprising, angioedema (Daisy can, as well-she just does it in a different way :). If he’s with me, he’s learned that in some situations, the best thing for him to do is not necessarily attract attention, but to help support and keep me safe when I’m having a problem. He walks really well on a lead with me, and lets me determine the pace and where we were going, unless he feels I’m in danger, in which case, he’ll let me know that, as well. He is thoughtful and intuitive, and if told “No” or “Leave it”, he usually doesn’t have to be told twice. He realizes if he is around someone fragile, and he is so calming that in addition to being a service dog, I think he would make an incredible therapy dog.

Both puppies are doing incredibly well with my novice-style scent training (they will sit and/or lay down in front of whatever I’ve told them to check for, even in cases where I’ve forgotten where I’ve hidden the “check product”), and I really am hoping to work and continue to build upon the talents both of them have. It’s been amazing to see the differences and similarities between them, and I really hope that once the weather (and whatever tenacious bug I caught-ugh!) improves, others will have the chance to meet them and see what wonderful dogs they are :).

Hello Everyone and Happy Fall!

I hope everybody is having a good week so far! It seems as though this month (or the whole year, actually) is going by very quickly, although that could also have something to do with the subtle reminders in many of the stores and neighborhoods that it’s almost the Holiday season J. In a way, I’m glad that it seems everyone is making an effort to make everything so festive; it makes me excited about putting together my new Christmas cards, the elf shoes, the gingerbread people, and other things I’m working on for Christmas, and it makes things seem more bright and cheery, even if it is before Thanksgiving .

Daisy and Baron are doing wonderful; I’m working with them as much as I’m able to, and I think they’re doing very well. They seem to look forward to when we’re working with them on the commands, and they pick-up on what it is were trying to teach them to do very quickly, thank goodness (it may have something to do with the number of treats they get, but at this point, I’m not really sure they can be overfed…..:)! Now that I think we’ve got some of the more basic commands down, we’ve been working on some other things more related to medical response and what we want them to do when we’re out in public. “Heel” has now progressed to “Heel Left” and “Heel Right”, and we’re working on “Pick it Up”, “Drop It”, and “Go Get It” both so they can help when I drop something on the floor, as well as hopefully transition these commands into “Go Get Medicine” later on. We’ve also been working on where they’re suppose to go when we do go out and sit for long periods (i.e. a doctor’s appointmentJ). Baron is admittedly a little better at this since he isn’t as wiggly as his sister, as evidence by the many photos I’ve taken where Daisy looks like she’s moving at warp speed, but they both are very good at figuring out what it is they need to be doing, and once given a toy or something to keep them occupied, I’m not sure if anybody would even know that I had them with me! Except for the fact that they are getting much larger than I originally anticipated, which should look interesting when they’re laying behind my legs (I’m thinking Edith Ann from “Laugh-In”…….).

We’ve also been working on my amateur version of scent-detection training, involving 3 cardboard tubes stuffed with napkins tossed randomly around a room, with one tube containing the “check” substance-usually peanut butter, since it’s pretty odiferous, and they’ll need to eventually “check” for it anyway because of the allergies (That's Daisy to the right doing the scent training and "checking" to see where I put the peanut butter tube. She's probably also checking for green beans:). They get really excited when we start “playing”, and they’re accurate about finding the allergen probably 85-90% of the time, which I think is pretty good! Many times, I’ll forget which tube I put the peanut butter in, and they alert to where the true allergen tube is (and give me a look when I don’t reward immediately for them finding it and I’m under the impression it’s in another tube-Mommy can be slow on the up-take sometimes…..), so I guess this training is working pretty well so far! I’m hoping to be able to start professional training for them in this once they receive all their shots and it’s okay for them to go out in public, especially since the compounds that we really need for them to find and alert to we can’t be in close proximity to (and that it would be embarrassing to attempt to explain to the people at an ER that the reason for our anaphylaxis was because I’d attempted scent-training on something I was allergic to…..). I’m excited about learning more about hot to go about doing this type of training, so it should be an interesting experience for us all. Especially if I have to be present for the training in a fetching yellow bio-hazmat suit as protection from the allergen..

Hopefully I’ll have more updates and also be posting some videos of them doing their training so everybody can see how well they’re doing (and to show-off the beautiful 70 lb babies :), and post information on other related topics (such as the which and the number of patches I need to order for their vests so they have all right necessary information but don’t look like a walking medical encyclopedia billboards). I’ve made a training cape to get them used to the idea of wearing something on their back, though I think ultimately I may end up with Search and Rescue backpacks to carry some additional items in case of emergency (and provide a little more room for patches). Anyway, I’ll be sure to include anything I get excited about (and that others will think “And she wanted to share this because…….?” ), and to post additional pictures and video once I figure out how to transfer the data to my computer and overlay it with interesting music . Be sure to check on this blog and the website during the holiday season as I do have some new Christmas/Holiday cards that I’m excited about, especially the Pop-up cards, and the new coloring cards for kids (or adults-sometimes you just need to color:) featuring Daisy and Baron. We also have some new gift tags available, as well as new holiday products that I've been making that I'm hoping to have posted relatively soon.

Hi Everybody!

I hope everyone’s summer was wonderful, and that things are going well or better as we progress further into Fall and closer and closer to the holidays! It seems as though this year has gone by incredibly fast; we’ve already started to receive catalogs highlighting the perfect Christmas gift for that someone special :), in addition to noticing the subtle Christmas-y nature of many TV commercials. Even though things will probably only get crazier as we get closer to the holiday season, my hope is that maybe this is a sign that things are improving economically and financially for everyone.

I apologize for my slowness in posting entries for this blog, and especially for not writing something to let others know what was going on. In September, we found and adopted 2 adorable golden retriever puppies, Baron and Daisy, that were raised by a wonderful family that live close to us here; I don’t think I can thank this family enough for the incredible gifts that they gave us in these beautiful dogs (and for all the time they let me spend when I was trying to decide what to do…..this family had the patience of a saint). Both Baron and Daisy have the sweetest and gentlest dispositions imaginable, and are incredibly intelligent and intuitive (which is very good, since I'm clueless more times than not…..). Even in the short time we’ve had them, they have already shown that they are sensitive to the seizures and to the fainting, which we were hoping for but weren’t expecting, and certainly not from both puppies as we know that this is something that can’t be taught. What we’ve found even more amazing is that they are also able to help with the allergy and anaphylaxis, as well as the complications associated with the adrenal insufficiency; again, our expectation was that both would receive response training for the hypotensive episodes and the seizures, and we hoped one or the other would show some inclination towards alerting for any one of the medical conditions. It has been incredibly interesting and astounding to watch the both of them both as they relate towards each other and towards us; when I’m with them, they pay close attention to what I’m doing, and if it looks like I may need help, they have developed their own alert and response system where one will stay with me (usually Baron), and the other (usually Daisy) will go get help, usually finding my Mom and giving her a kiss on the knee and bring her back to where I am. I have no idea how they figured this out, and how they did so as quickly as they did. Writing down or trying to explaining this behavior doesn’t give justice as to how miraculous what they’ve been able to figure out on their own; it almost appears someone may have already given them some training….perhaps St. Francis decided he wanted to help in some way :). Anyway, I hope to be able to update the blog more often now on the adventures of Daisy and Baron, and probably include a few other things such as recipes just to vary the content, and attempt to write post more photos and videos as we progress through the training and work towards our public access certification. I also plan on continuing to make my cards, including new ones of Baron and Daisy, and other items to help with the cost of the puppies (my goodness, do they eat a lot; and they keep growing at record speed), with new card designs coming out for both Thanksgiving and Christmas (really, who can resist a dog in an elf costume?:), as well as making and selling other items that I hope others will enjoy for the holiday season. I truly believe that these loving dogs are going to make a huge difference for us, and are already wonderful companions to have added to our family.

Thank you so much to everyone that has generously contributed so much towards the service puppies and the training. Even though it has been a very difficult couple of years for many, I’m overwhelmed and very grateful to those that have done so much to help us, both financially and emotionally. I hope that in some way, I will be able to repay the kindness that others have shown to our family, and let everyone know how much we truly appreciate their help and support. Father's Day Cards

Hi everybody-
Here's the finished video that we have to show our new Father's Day cards we now have available, in addition to the new vintage aircraft cards, which would also make an excellent Father's Day greeting! The 3 cards shown are $3.25 a piece, with orders of 3 or more priced at only $3.00 (we love large orders, and apparently the number 3...... :). Anyway, all proceeds from sales will go towards the training of a medical response service dog, and we truly appreciate all of the help, support, and kindness we have received from so many that have both bought cards and given very generous donations. New Vintage Aircraft Youtube Video!

Hi Everyone!

I hope everyone is doing wonderful! I just finished (took me long enough, didn't it?:) the video for the new vintage aircraft cards that are available, which feature aircraft from the 1910-1940. We include tidbits of interesting information on the back about each plane in case anyone wants to know more about the aircraft. The cards are $2.75 a piece, and are $2.50 a piece if you order three; we can personalize each card or take requests for different aircraft types for any event or occasion (Father's Day, perhaps........:). New Mother's Day Greetings Youtube Video

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone's been having a beautiful spring! I just finished the new Youtube video (complete with Doris Day music, I may add :) for the new cards we have available for Mother's Day, and in addition to the cards in the video, our Birdhouse cards and other greetings we have are also a sweet way to say "Happy Mother's Day!". Or any other sentiment or occassion, for that matter-we can always personalize, too, so it just adds to the options of sending someone the perfect happy card in the mail! And, as always, any of the money earned from any of our cards go directly towards a medical response service dog and to the service dog organization so that they can continue their incredible work with the dogs, the disabled, and the community.

Also, remember that you can also peruse our cards in person at Chaparral Homemade Ice Cream while ordering and eating scrumptious ice cream, sandwiches, and other excellent food and drinks that they offer (and since it's starting to get relatively warm here in Phoenix......it would make a most excellent day-trip to escape the Valley, especially during the summer :). You can also take a look at some of our cards at Wild Iris Coffeehouse in Prescott, AZ when you need to make a stop for fresh-made coffee or other delicious beverages or baked goods that they offer (not to mention relaxing while looking out at the beautiful view they have of Granite Creek while sipping your delightful beverage and eating your lovely pastry:)!

Hello Everybody!

We just recently went into this store and tried a few of the items that they had, and we're so thrilled that this store opened, and that it's so close to us, though admittedly, that factor could make it rather habit-forming for us :). Everything that they carry is gluten-free, and what we've tried so far has been delicious and definitely something that you would want to eat. More specifically they carry a chocolate-covered wafer cookie that is absolutely wonderful), and the owners are very nice and helpful with directing you to what your looking for and being sensitive to other food and environmental allergies.

They also have a website that a multitude of resources for those with celiac and information related to the conditio n, which is incredibly helpful for those that are trying to do more research into celiac disease and wheat/gluten allergies and how to avoid them.

The variety that they carry is really incredible, and they have stocked products from both local and companies located outside the state that make all kinds of delightful edibles. Hi Everybody-

I hope everyone's year had been wonderful so far! Even with some of the the terrible tragedies that have occurred, it seems that things may be looking at least a little more optimistic in some regards, and it would be nice to think that things would improve throughout the year and into the future!

I’d been thinking about an experience that my family and I had last year when we were in a meeting with someone that we had just met, and the topic of allergies came up in the conversation. The person we were speaking with brought up the example of peanut allergies, and said something along the lines of “Well, it’s just an allergy. It’s not like it’s going to kill you. You just deal with it.”. While I suppose at the most basic level this comment is true in some capacities, my family and I were somewhat horrified by this matte statement. While this comment may or may not have been based out of mere ignorance or just being unaware of the information, the idea that there are many people that may not be able to recognize that in some cases allergies and asthma are potentially very fatal, and that failure to recognize them as such in these situations could mean the difference between life and death is somewhat terrifying. With this in mind, I thought I would include some information on allergies and anaphylaxis, in addition to giving some information on our experiences and why I’ve applied for a medical response service dog that has training in allergy detection and response. I don’t know how helpful this will be to others, and I am not in any way offering medical advice, or claim to be anywhere near an expert in this field; this is, in essence, a conglomeration of some research I’ve done, and the experience that we’ve had over the years in regard to these medical conditions.

Many people have allergies, with current estimates ranging from 1 in 5 to 1 in 3. It’s an extremely common medical condition that can be caused by a multitude of substances and environmental triggers, and, much the same as photosensitivity, can manifest itself in many different ways, with the immune system inciting an inflammatory response after it has been exposed to the allergen by stimulating the release of mast cells and basophils, both of which are forms of white blood cells. An allergic-type of immune response is one of 4 types of hypersensitivity, and is indentified as a type 1 sensitivity because the reaction that occurs is immediate. The immune response is activated by T cells, a type of immune cell that produces a cytokeine called interleukin-4, and their contact with B cells, a type of lymphocyte whose main function is to produce antibodies. Once the interleukin-4 has been combined with the B-cells, this causes the production of a group of antibodies called IgE (Immunoglobulin E). Once the IgE has been released, it then binds itself to the appropriate receptors on basophils and mast cells, both of which are a type of white blood cell. Because these cells are now combined with the IgE antibodies, this sensitizes them to the allergy, and causes an exaggerated inflammatory reaction. Subsequent exposure to the allergen is then cross-linked to the IgE antibodies, resulting in the degranulation of the mast cells and basophils and the release of histamines and proteases. The allergic reaction itself can be divided into two phases, with the first being the acute phase in which the reaction starts immediately after exposure to the allergen and causes the intial symptoms. The second phase is the late-phase response, and the second phace being the late-phase response in which the allergic reaction is again initiated 2-24 hours after the original reaction as a result of the added involvement of other leukocytes such as neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages.

For most, these reactions then will cause some sort of response, such as hay fever or rhinitis, which is certainly unpleasant, though in many cases, is not considered to be a serious health concern necessitating immediate medical attention except under special circumstances. I think many are familiar with the number of medications that are available both over-the-counter as well as by prescription that can be used to treat some aspect of the allergic response, and are available in different formulations, such as in creams or pills, so that they can be used and/or applied directly to the area that is having the reaction. In most cases, these medications are highly successful in treating both the symptoms, as well as the underlying inflammatory response that initiated the allergic reaction in the first place. Particularly in cases where the allergen can be identified, this additionally helps in determining the best treatment solution both for allergy prophylaxis, such as allergy shots, and in cases where there is a more immediate need for allergy treatment upon exposure. In general, allergies in this range are common, and for many it only becomes an issue with exposure, such as those with seasonal allergies, and can usually be relatively easy to treat in most cases.

However, with some allergic reactions, the response that the immune system mounts towards what it considers to be a harmful substances can be potentially fatal, as in the case with anaphylaxis or some cases of asthma. When allergic reactions start to cause bronchoconstriction or a constricted airway that limits an individual’s ability to breath, this is a very real and serious cause for concern; most would associate this type of reaction with substances such as seafood or peanuts, though it is possible to develop reactions of this type to almost anything. Other serious allergic reactions, such as internal swelling or edema, hypotension, or any other type of cutaneous reaction, is also of very real concern, and usually must be addressed by medical personnel as soon as possible to try to limit or stop the reaction. Causes for these types of reaction can vary, though they range from conditions such as mastocytosis, which is the overproduction of mast cells, having a high IgE count or high number of environmental/food/medication allergies, as well as congenital and genetic conditions that predispose to either over-proliferation of certain aspects of the immune system or to certain types of systemic inflammation, either chronic or episodic.

A very real area of concern that is often overlooked is the collective response of many to the idea of allergies, and the potential danger there is in assuming that if somebody mentions an allergy that the reaction they have will be mild and relatively easy to treat. My family and I have seen much eye-rolling and the assumption by many that our allergies are either not as severe as we describe them or that we are truly not allergic, with a frightening majority of these individuals being employed in the medical industry in some capacity. We have found that it is under these circumstances that we are in the most danger; to make the assumption that the information someone is trying to convey, be it under emergency circumstances or not, is either over-exaggerated or is in some way not entirely accurate is under the best of circumstances unwise, and, in many cases, a very frequent cause of serious medical errors and patient injury or death. It seems that for many, allergies are not considered to be a serious medical disorder, though the potential consequences of making this assumption are dangerous, if not fatal, in many cases. While it is true that many allergies will take on the form of eye redness, or sinusitis, this doesn’t hold true for everyone, as is the case with any other medical condition. When this is further combined with other complicated medical conditions, such as an autonomic disorder or vascular condition, the appearance of anaphyalxis or an asthma attack may look completely different than it would in someone who isn’t otherwise compromised in this regard, and may therefore delay proper treatment until it’s too late.

For me, in the majority of cases where I am having an allergic reaction, I won’t experience any type of warning symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, or watery eyes, but will instead jump straight to throat constriction and swelling, all over body swelling with a painful raised red rash, sporadic and random changes in blood pressure regulation and heart rate, and, in cases where I haven’t reached my medication soon enough, hypoxia that causes me to pass out and have hypoxic seizures until my oxygenation improves (not to mention a bad headache). And all of this will happen within seconds of exposure to what my body considers to be a harmful substance, such as breathing in particles of macadamia nuts, unwittingly eating something that contains what others consider to be a miniscule amount of whatever allergen it may contain, or simply being within 30 feet of a building that was painted the day before. Once I experience a severe allergic reaction of anaphylaxis, I will usually enter a cycle where every 2 to 4 hours, I will again start to experience the same allergy/anaphylaxis symptoms, and this can continue anywhere from 2 days after the initial reaction to over 6 weeks. Both my mother and I have been told to wear Medic Alert bracelets to warn emergency personnel of our allergies, though to list all of our medication allergies, let alone environmental or food, on a single bracelet (or 5) would be impossible at this point. We both carry cards that must be constantly updated every time a new allergen is discovered, and while we have seen many medical personnel either copy down the entire list by hand or will make a copy to attach to a file, many times someone will start to question (or argue) the true nature of the reaction, or will flat-out say “You can’t possibly be allergic to this many things,” and will simply leave it at that.

To illustrate this issue, because of an experience I had last year in an emergency room, my family and I have researched the other contents of what usually is put into a Saline-drip IV bag such as what you normally get at the hospital for dehydration. After a particularly bad reaction to what we could only connect back to a bag of saline I was given, we discovered that the company that produces some types of IV saline conmtain a porcine-based substrate, and/or sodium benzoate, as a preservative for the bag and its contents, in addition to reusing their saline drip bags multiple times and using high heat on the plastic bags as the predominant means of sterilization. Because of the severity of my reaction, my parents always have to check the brand of the IV fluids they’re planning on using, and have to insist that I am indeed allergic to this particular brand of IV fluids and have to either go without or that another brand be used. This almost always leads to the comment “She can’t be allergic to saline,”, to which my parents will respond that I’m not allergic to the saline itself, just to the preservatives used in the IV bag. There are many nurses that have asked why we would even be aware of this information, to which we answer that it’s out of necessity; we have to be vigilant and cognizant of what is being used or being put into our bodies, and regardless of whether it’s something we consume at a restaurant or a life-saving emergency medication, there is always the potential that the compound could cause a fatal reaction to occur so rapidly that there may be no way to respond quickly enough, even in a hospital setting.

Another story that was recounted to us was a surgical nurse that was assisting with a spinal surgery, and as she opened the packaging to something that was needed for the surgery, she immediately fell to the floor and died within seconds of opening the package. Latex had been used in the packaging, and even in an operatory, where all of the equipment to resuscitate her was readily available, the doctors and other nurses just didn’t have enough time between when she initially opened the package and when she stopped breathing. While sobering, this story was recounted to my mother and me by a nurse that had been in the room when this occurred, and it had a major impact on her both personally and professionally; needless to say, she took my list of allergies seriously enough to post multiple allergy warnings outside of my hospital room (for which I was, and still am, immensely appreciative).

In regard to how this issue connects back to my application of an allergy detection and response service dog, because of the extent of some of my allergies and the frequency with which my reactions occur, I’ve been told that a service dog trained in allergy detection and response would be invaluable to my family and me, though I realize that there is absolutely no way to train for all of these allergies. However, because I’m no longer able to smell some compounds, such as latex paint, to which I am the most anaphylactic to, a service dog may be able to check and then prevent me from entering someplace that has a deadly allergen I would not otherwise be aware of, or will be able to summon help if I am experiencing an allergic reaction and need immediate medical assistance. I’ve also been told that the service dog can carry my medications as well as my medication and allergy cards so that they are easily accessible to medical personnel, and my family, at the point where they need them.

I apologize for the length of this post, and if you have read this all the way through to this point, I thank you for all of your patience and willingness to wade through my lengthy description of this complicated topic. This post is not meant to be vent of frustration on my part; in essence, I guess my point is that many times, people will make an assumption about what they consider to be an everyday problem, such as allergies, and may not be fully informed, or even be able to grasp, the gravity of this type of medical issue until it’s too late. This can apply to people both outside and within the medical industry, and I hope that perhaps some of this information may provide someone with a better understanding that sometimes something as simple as walking by a freshly-painted room or eating food with a “hidden” ingredient can incapacitate someone to the extent that they can no longer breath or function, and could possibly die from their exposure. Saying that you learn to live with it is somewhat of an understatement in many cases, regardless of the medical issue. Television and Photosensitivity:An Indoor Lightening Storm

Hi Everyone-

I thought I would diverge a little from what I usually post and attempt something a little different. Though I’ve provided some information about why I‘ve been hoping to become a part of a program to obtain a service dog, this may give some additional insight into why my family and I feel this is so important, and better explain my situation. Predominantly because it has had such a major impact on my life and on the lives of my family, and we have found very few individuals or organizations that are willing to address the issue, I wanted to include information about the current trend in broadcasting about using flashing and/or strobing lights of any form, and attempt to include information that others may find somewhat helpful about photosensitivity and its related health affect, This is by no means an exhaustive research article or intended to give medical advice of any sort; my purpose is merely to provide a platform to focus attention on the issue, and to find a constructive means to address it.

Photosensitivity can come in many forms, with some reactions ranging from the obvious and profound to the most minor of indications that the flash affected the individual. While a flash to some it may be of no importance or an annoyance, to many, it is a single event that causes not just one reaction, but will continue to affect an individual long after they have seen the single camera flash. Obtaining and maintaining seizure or migraine control is never easy to achieve, and once it has been broken, it is extremely difficult to reach the sensitive equilibrium that an individual had previous to the exposure. At times, it has taken me over a month to recover somewhat from a single camera flash, and this doesn’t include the cascade affect that the increase in seizure frequency has on my other health conditions. The same holds true for my Mother, and I know of many others who have recounted the same experiences. There have been many times in which we have been in a public situation, such as a restaurant, and an individual will become extremely enthusiastic about taking a flash photo to make sure they capture every important moment; which is certainly and unarguable within their right. Admittedly, a few times we have asked the managers at a restaurant or wherever we are to ask the individual if they could stop for just long enough for me to be carried out of the situation, though this is only at times when I have experienced so many seizure episodes that I am no longer capable of walking out. If the situation and I am able, our preference is always for us to leave before inconveniencing or restricting anyone else; it is easier both on the individual and the place of business for us to do so, though it does severely limit our ability and freedom to do what we needed or wanted to do at that business.

One example that I think many would be able to recognize the possible catastrophic affect flashes of light can have on others in the form of photoradar cameras and speed enforcement. I haven’t driven since I was 16 years old, both because of the lack of seizure/event control, and because I realized that it simply wasn’t safe for me to do so out of concern for everyone’s safety, not just mine. I made this decision willingly, even though it has not only affected my freedom but the lives of my parents and my family, and with the understanding that as soon as I was able to obtain some control over these events that I would no longer have these constraints, though would exercise caution and common-sense at times when I did seem to be in a seizure-cycle. With the installation of the radar cameras on many of the local freeways and major roads and intersections here, many arguments were made both for and against their installation, though one of the areas that could have been used by those opposed to their use that I thought would be one of the strongest was never addressed with any frequency or adequate explanation-the possible affect that the camera flash would have on all the drivers and the possible injuries, deaths, etc. that this could lead to.

However, probably one of the most problematic examples of all is the current trend for what seems to be a majority of television ad campaigns, and many television programs, to use flashing of some form or another at least once during their short time spot. One of the most striking events that epitomizes this issue was in 1997 when the “Pokemon: Pocket Monsters” episode aired in Japan, and a particular scene in the cartoon utilized a sequence of strobing red, blue, and white lights. Hundreds of children and adults had to be hospitalized because of the type and severity of the reactions that they had to this visual sequence in a children’s cartoon show, with symptoms ranging from vomiting blood to seizures, migraines, dystonic movements, and a myriad of other health issues that had long-term implications for their sufferers, many of whom had previously been extremely healthy and didn’t appear to have any underlying neurological or other physiological disorder. The reaction to this set of flashing lights wasn’t limited just to when the individual saw them or immediately thereafter; many people continued, and probably still continue to some extent, to have serious complications as a result of this type of overstimulation. This single event was enough to create a massive public panic and outcry, as well as to bring focus to the idea that a public health issue doesn’t necessarily have to be in the form of a contagion in order for it to be considered an epidemic and a very real threat to many members of society. This idea has been further cemented since by the mass-induction of seizures and similar neurological attacks caused by video and computer games, and any other media form that uses flashing, strobing, or a specific frequency of lights that is enough to affect brain function and ability. Many companies also realize the inherent risk in using this visual tactic; many electronics and similar items now come with a warning, both on the box and instructions, that there may be an inherent risk of possible seizures or similar neurological attacks with the use of their product, and that sensitive individuals need to exercise caution when using the item.

There have also been numerous studies in the medical community around the world with

documented information in regard to the affect of strobing and/or flashing lights, and the data gathered from each of these studies has been further qualified by countless hospitals, specialists and other centers of scientific research and study. This information has been further studied to the extent that certain frequencies of light, color, and strobing have been identified commensurate with the profound affect they have physiologically, and public policy has been formulated around this

information to try to protect public health. In essence, the global consensus is the same: flashing lights do have an affect on brain function, and much of the time, this affect is detrimental and causes a disruption in normal activity electrically, metabolically, and in other capacities. In addition, the extent to which it impairs normal function varies with each individual; while scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs) can effectively document electrical activity on the surface of the brain, attempting to map the inner is much more difficult, and can cause a different set of symptoms to arise as a result of where focalization is taking place.

Again, the issue of flashing or strobing lights on television may be of no importance to some or a mild irritation or annoyance to others, but to those that are affected by flashing lights, it is on-par with unleashing a bolt of lightening into their living room at multiple and random points throughout the day. Because of the very nature of advertising, the random and sporadic nature of ad placement and the need to reach a wide-viewing audience by placing these commercials on multiple channels and times throughout the day further complicates the issue in that there is no concrete means to determine at what point it’s safe to turn the television on. Admittedly, a valid argument can be made to just completely stop watching television all-together to reduce the possibility of a reaction to 0%, but to someone who has already had to give up many freedoms others take for granted, and is usually feeling somewhat isolated

already because they do have these physical limitations, it can also be argued that television is one of the few “normal” activities that people should be able to participate in for a multitude of reasons.

Another argument could be made that all television programming should be safe for everyone to watch; this isn’t an ADA issue, but is in reality keeping everyone safe. It isn’t necessary to have a visible physical reaction to stimuli in order for it to have an affect on an individual, particularly if the reaction is localized and only affects certain regions. To compound any health issue, and I really do mean

any health issue, with the type of over-stimulation that is inherent in this type of advertising is unnecessary and irresponsible. If I am fortunate enough to be able to remember the beginning of a commercial or program segment that involves flashing lights of some form, this is of some value. However, much of the time, my memory loss prior and subsequent to a seizure event doesn’t afford me this luxury, and I am dependent on my family much of the time to warn me beforehand if they recognize that this is going to occur. Needless to say, if I have any memory at all of what was being advertised, or if I ask anyone in the room with me what the commercial was highlighting, my first reaction is not to buy the product or service; if the company using these techniques has that much disregard at the point where their consumer is making the decision to utilize what they are selling, logic dictates that the customer service will probably not improve once you are their customer. This may or may not be true with each case, but when given a choice of what to buy, I will usually gravitate towards whatever product I have seen, and can remember, that hasn’t had a detrimental affect on my health or otherwise, and I’m sure there are many who would echo the same sentiment. Softer messages may be more difficult to sell, but it is safer in the long run for everyone.

My purpose with this particular blog entry isn’t meant to be a written formulation of my frustration and concern with the current fad to include visual stimuli in television advertising and broadcasting. Rather, it has taken me months to gather the courage to write something about this topic; I fully appreciate the need for freedom of the press and for expression, and I certainly don’t believe in complete government-control with any media form. I do believe, however, that television broadcasters, advertisers, and others involved need to consider that there is a reason why there are strict guidelines in other countries regarding what can and can’t be put into media outlets, and that they do have a certain amount of social responsibility to ensure public safety. If merely seeing a set of flashing lights can continue to cause a reaction for at least a month after I am exposed, I shudder to think of the ill-affects that this is causing for children with autism, ADHD, ADD, and other related disorders that are already complicated enough to handle and treat without adding in outside factors. Legislation to limit the use of flashing or strobing lights would be a possible answer, though I wonder if there were enough public outcry and obvious dissatisfaction if this could perhaps be a more effective means through which to change these practices with television broadcasters. If nothing else, it may limit the number of advertising companies to the few that may realize that there is a form of responsible advertising to convey a message that is much more effective and doesn’t create as much of a liability issue. I realize that there are many, many important issues that are being debated now, and that the long-term affects of many of these issues are so crucial that the issue of flashing lights on television seems rather meaningless. However, I also think that there are many, many people who are affected by this issue and aren’t quite sure how to go about trying to influence change in this arena. Out of the many groups we have contacted about if they were involved in any activities that would limit the flashing and strobing lights in broadcasting, we are somewhat surprised at the lack of cooperation and interest we have received from organizations that we thought would be more able to initiate change, either through the private sector or government lobbying. My hope is that perhaps by trying to share information about this issue, it will be possible to change this trend. If nothing else, perhaps because this issue isn’t as critical as the others being debated, perhaps it would be easier to effect change just because it isn’t as much of a “hot topic”.

As you can probably tell at this point, I’m not watching nearly as much television, so I have some additional time to devote to researching and writing topics I feel are important of that I’m interested (or have a vested interest in).
